GREENVILLE, N.C. – With a spot in the American Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship secured, East Carolina will attempt to optimize its seeding this week when it closes out regular season play with a Wednesday home match against Charlotte and Friday road tilt at Temple.
Â
Both matches are scheduled for a 6 p.m. first serve and will stream live through ESPN+.
Â
The Pirates (16-8, 9-5 AAC) are tied with Tulsa for fourth place in the league standings, but the Golden Hurricane own the tiebreaker due to their narrow sweep of the Pirates last Friday in Greenville. ECU and Tulsa are just one game back of Wichita State for third place.
Â
The Pirates can finish anywhere from third to fifth while South Florida and Rice are tied at the top with identical 12-2 conference records. The AAC Volleyball Championship is scheduled for Nov. 22-24 at Koch Arena in Wichita.
Â
East Carolina features several players ranked among the league statistical leaders as Carlia Northcross checks in at fourth in blocks per set (1.09), Lara Uyar is fifth in digs per set (3.81) and Fran McBride slots seventh in hitting percentage (.305). Collectively, the Pirates sit second in opponent hitting percentage (.185), third in hitting percentage (.235) and sixth in digs per set (15.03).
Â
With a victory Wednesday night, ECU would clinch its best-ever winning percentage at home in a single season and finish 9-2 inside the friendly confines of Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. The Pirates also require just one more win to reach double figures in AAC play for the third time since joining the league prior to the 2014 campaign (13 in 2017 and 11 in 2023).

Looking At Charlotte
Charlotte (5-22, 2-12 AAC) will be under new leadership going forward after head coach Karen Weatherington was relieved of her duties Monday morning. Weatherington was in her 10th season at the helm of the program, producing a 118-160 record. The 49ers have been eliminated from contention for one of the spots in the AAC Volleyball Championship after falling to South Florida and Tulsa at home over the weekend. Charlotte resides at the very bottom of the league's statistical rankings in most categories but do slot sixth in both blocks per set (2.14) and service aces per set (1.53). Kristen Birmingham paces the offense with an average of 3.34 kills per set - good for seventh on the circuit. The 49ers are 2-7 away from Halton Arena with wins over UNCW and Tulane as well as losses to Furman, South Florida, Florida Atlantic, Memphis, UAB, Temple and Rice.
Â
The Charlotte Series
Charlotte leads the all-time series with East Carolina by a 19-12 margin, but the Pirates have captured two of the last three meetings, including a sweep of the 49ers at Halton Arena just a few weeks ago (Oct. 23). Â

Temple Talk
Temple (13-15, 5-9 AAC) is one of three teams, along with UAB and North Texas) that are one game back of eighth place in the league standings. The Owls travel to Charlotte Sunday for their regular season finale after hosting ECU. Temple has done a decent job of generating offense this season, ranking fourth in the conference in points per set (16.78) and kills per set (13.01). The Owls have also served pretty tough, putting up a league third-best 1.67 aces per set. Taylor Davenport paces the conference in kills per set (4.23) and points per set (4.87) while Sydney Jones checks in third at 3.62. Temple has fared well at home this season, winning nine of 12 matches inside McGonigle Hall.
Â
The Temple Series
East Carolina swept Temple earlier this season in Greenville to even the all-time series at 10-10. The Pirates have won five straight over the Owls and three in a row in Philadelphia.

1K/1K Club
Nearing the conclusion of her third collegiate season, Alderete is within striking distance of joining the prestigious 1,000 kill and 1,000 dig club at East Carolina. She requires just 40 digs to reach the milestone after collecting her 1,000th kill in the win over North Texas. The most recent member of the program to register the achievement is Bri Wood who collected 1,303 kills and 1,144 digs during her five seasons (2017-21) wearing the Purple and Gold. Aptly, Wood currently serves as ECU's Director of Student-Athlete Development and Life Skills.
