Pirates Send Four to NCAA Southeast Regional
November 14, 2024 | Cross Country
GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina cross country team will send four athletes to the NCAA Southeast Regional on Friday morning. The meet will be taking place in Rock Hill, S.C. in 2024 with Winthrop playing host.
On the women's side it'll be Kaylee McCullough and Erin Pope for the Pirates in a 6K race with the gun set to go off at 10:30 a.m. ET. McCullough and Pope enter the race after taking 19th and 20th, respectively at the American Athletic Conference Championships on Nov. 1.
On the men's side, J Henry Lyon and Alex Sawyer will toe the line for a 10K race kicking off at 11:30 a.m. ET. Sawyer led the charge with Lyon close behind as the duo earned All-Conference honors in 12th and 14th. Their All-Conference efforts were the Pirates first overall since Abby Yourkavitch finished 13th for the women in 2021 and the first on the men's side since Josh Spare finished 13th in 2019. 12th place for Sawyer was the highest finish since Lindsay Yentz took eighth in the 2020-21 championship held in the spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the highest for a men's runner since Bakri Abushouk took fourth in 2017.
The quartet will look to conclude the season on a high after an eventful 2024 for the group. Live results will be available from Flash Results.
