GREENVILLE, N.C. – The third seeded East Carolina soccer team is set to compete in the American Athletic Conference Semifinal Round against #2 South Florida on Thursday at 2 p.m. in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. The game will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
The contest is the first semifinal appearance for the Pirates since 2018 when they also faced South Florida.
Last Time Out
The Pirates found the goal to end a double-overtime prize fight with Charlotte from the foot of Erica Roberts in the 101st minute. It was the first goal of Roberts' career and in the return to Golden Goal overtime, it was all ECU needed to advance to the Semifinal Round. The Pirates fired seven shots on goal to the 49ers two but were unable to convert until the clock passed the century mark. Maeve English did play well in goal with a pair of saves for her 29th career shutout.Â
Scouting South Florida
The Bulls advanced to the semis with a 1-0 win over North Texas on Monday thanks to an Anna Sutter goal in just the 11th minute. The team was offensively dominant as has become customary, racking up a 24-6 margin on shots. For the season, the Bulls are still compiling 17.4 shots per game with Sutter leading the charge with eight goals and three assists. 10 Bulls players have scored goals on the season and 16 have contributed assists. Leire Herraez Gallach has gotten the majority of the run in goal with a remarkable .889 save percentage and just 0.36 goals allowed per game.Â
Series History
The Pirates and Bulls met earlier this season with South Florida serving up a disappointing 3-0 defeat in Johnson Stadium. Elyse Thornton, Anna Sutter and Sophia Cabral scored the trio of goals in that game as South Florida moved their lead in the all-time series to 13-3-1.Â
Records Broken
Annabelle Abbott and Maeve English have both broken the program record for career appearances with 85, besting Kim Sanford's 84 from 2017-2021. Against Charlotte on Monday, English also passed Amber Campbell for the most career goalkeeper minutes in program history now standing at 7,778. The previous record was 7,690.Â
Iron Woman
Abby Sowa has played in every game and not come off for a second since Oct. 17, 2021. She has played 5,340 consecutive minutes and has been on the pitch for all 1,620 minutes this season. That's two full seasons and 59 full games.Â
