Â
ECU (17-6, 1-2 AAC) got back in the win column Tuesday with a 7-4 victory over UNCW. The Pirates spotted the Seahawks a 4-0 lead, but the East Carolina bullpen did not allow the visitors to score past the second inning while the Pirate bats plated seven unanswered runs to cement the comeback. Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman covered the final three innings and struck out four to earn the win on the mound.
Â
After one weekend of nine in AAC play, East Carolina sits just one game back of a five-team cluster for first place. The Pirates outscored host UTSA 21-20 last weekend but dropped the first and third contests of that series by a combined three runs.
Â
East Carolina slots among the league leaders in several categories as the Pirates pace the circuit in earned run average (3.73) and fielding percentage (.982) while ranking second in batting average (.303). ECU has surrendered a league-low 96 runs and has struck out 253 batters in 205.1 innings of work. Nationally, the Pirates check in at third in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.61), fifth in WHIP (1.15), seventh in fewest walks allowed per nine innings (3.07), 12th in fielding percentage, 14th in earned run average and 49th in batting average.
Â
Carter Cunningham leads the East Carolina offensive efforts with an AAC-best .419 batting average that slots him 37th among the NCAA Division I leaders. Lunsford-Shenkman continues to prove electric when he takes the mound, ranking fifth nationally in strikeouts per nine innings (16.70) and seventh in ERA (1.07). The Pirates' game one starter Trey Yesavage is also sixth in the country in total strikeouts (54) and 17th in strikeouts per nine innings (13.89).
Â
ECU is 10-1 inside the friendly confines of Clark-LeClair Stadium this season with series sweeps of Rider and Columbia as well as a win over then No. 15 North Carolina.
