No. 9 ECU No Hits Charlotte In AAC Series Opening Win
April 12, 2024 | Baseball
The no hitter marked the second time in program history that the Pirates (26-7, 7-3 AAC) have thrown two in the same week as Jake Jacobs accounted for both in wins over Atlantic Christian (4/23) and Mount Olive (4/28) during the 1989 campaign.
Trey Yesavage produced six innings of clean baseball with 12 strikeouts and three walks before Jackson DiLorenzo pitched a perfect seventh frame to seal the win and send the 49ers (15-19, 4-6 AAC) to their third consecutive run-rule loss in league play.
Ryley Johnson and Dixon Williams combined for four hits, three runs scored and six RBI to pace the offensive efforts while Colby Wallace went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Bristol Carter accounted for a pair of runs driven in.

After Yesavage worked around a leadoff walk to post a zero in the top of the first, Carter Cunningham blistered an 0-1 offering into left field for a single and Ryan McCrystal would draw a two-out walk. The runners would steal second and third simultaneously, setting up Carter's infield bunt single that pushed Cunningham across to give ECU a lead it would never relinquish.
With one out in the bottom of the second, Williams was plunked by a 1-2 pitch and would not have to wait long to score as Johnson worked a full count and sent a pitch sailing high over the wall in right to make it a 3-0 contest. Jacob Jenkins-Cowart and McCrystal then drew consecutive walks to set up Carter for an RBI groundout that left the Pirates ahead by four.
Williams secured an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth before ECU blew the game open in the sixth with a five spot. McCrystal started things with a leadoff free pass and moved to second on a Carter sac bunt. Justin Wilcoxen would then reach on an infield single, and Joey Berini plated pinch runner Luke Nowak with another sacrifice bunt to stretch the advantage to six. Williams kept the pressure on later in the frame with a two-run single while a wild pitch resulted in another tally. Johnson capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly to cap the inning.
DiLorenzo wasted little time in the top of the seventh, fanning the Charlotte cleanup hitter Juan Correa before inducing a grounder to second and a fly ball to right for the final two outs.

- East Carolina improved to 16-1 at Clark-LeClair Stadium in 2024 and 4-0 in conference play.
- ECU ran its record to 35-5 all time against Charlotte and has won 14-straight meetings in the series.
- The Pirates tallied double-digit hits for the fifth time in the last six games and the 17th time this year. East Carolina is 14-3 in those contests.
- Johnson has reached base safely in 31-consecutive appearances – the longest such streak for the program since Thomas Francisco and Connor Norby did the same during the 2021 season.
- When the 49ers did get runners on base, they went 0-for-5. Conversely, ECU was 7-for-16 (.438) in that situation as well as 6-for-10 (.600) with runners in scoring position.
