April 23, 2024 | Softball
Chapel Hill, N.C. – Morgan Johnson went 2-for-3 at the plate including a two-run home run in the first inning as East Carolina defeated North Carolina 6-4 at Anderson Softball Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Logan Sutton added two hits including a home run of her own for the Pirates (33-16, 9-12 AAC) who defeated the Tar Heels in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2003.
The Pirates jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Jackson drew a walk and Johnson followed up with her two-run bomb.Â
After two scoreless innings, ECU would extend its lead to 3-0 after Sutton's solo shot to center field in the top of the fourth but Carolina would respond with a two-run blast after the left field wall to cut ECU's lead to one run in the bottom of the fourth.
ECU would load the bases in the top of the seventh and Anna Sawyer would hit a two RBI single to extend ECU's lead to 5-2 and Sutton would reach first on a Tar Heel error, allowing Kaleigh Ayscue to score, giving the Pirates enough of a cushion for the win.
Taylor Apple (12-7) picked up the win in the circle, tossing two strikeouts in four innings of work.
