Combined No No Propels No. 9 ECU Past Elon 12-0
April 09, 2024 | Baseball
Â
The trio etched their names into the school annals just over five years after Jake Kuchmaner produced a perfect game at Maryland in a 3-0 win in College Park back on March 17, 2019. It was also just the second combined no hitter in program history and the first since Foye Minton and Davey Penny teamed up for a no-no against Duke in a 5-0 triumph Feb. 7, 2000 at Harrington Field in Greenville.
Â
Facing a five-game week, ECU (24-7) racked up nine hits in a contest that lasted just over two hours. The Pirates also completed the season series sweep over the Phoenix (11-21) after downing Elon 10-1 at Latham Park almost a month ago.
Â
Winter (2-1) was more than up to the task in his second career start, pitching a career-best four scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Kahler and Thomas covered the final three frames with Kahler registering three strikeouts and Thomas throwing a clean inning in his collegiate debut. Hudson Narke surrendered four runs (one earned) on three hits with three walks and no strikeouts in just one frame to take the loss.

Bristol Carter tallied his first collegiate home run and finished the night with three RBI while Justin Wilcoxen went 2-for-2 with a run scored and one driven in. Carter Cunningham and Ryan McCrystal also blasted long balls, combining for four runs scored and five RBI.
Â
After Winter sat down the Elon side on just nine pitches in the top of the first, a costly Phoenix error with two outs opened the door for East Carolina to put up a three spot. With Ryley Johnson at third after a leadoff walk, failed pickoff and fly ball to left, Jacob Jenkins-Cowart drew a walk and Colby Wallace grounded a ball to second base that was misplayed and allowed Johnson to cross home safely. Wilcoxen followed with an RBI single, and Joey Berini ripped a run-scoring double into the right center gap that left the Pirates up 3-0 after one complete.
Â
Cunningham extended the lead to four with a sacrifice fly in the second frame, but ECU really blew the game open in the third as it exploded for seven runs on five hits. Carter, Cunningham and McCrystal all went yard in the inning as all three blasts were of the multi-run variety.
Â
Cam Clonch entered to play first base in the top of the fourth and capped the scoring with an RBI single in the bottom of the frame. Kahler and Thomas took it from there as the Phoenix mustered just a single walk the rest of the way.
Â

- East Carolina continued to excel inside the friendly confines, improving to 14-1 at Clark-LeClair Stadium this season.
- The Pirates pounded out six extra-base hits and notched seven two-out RBI.
- Jenkins-Cowart extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a double in the third inning.
- ECU put four of its six leadoff batters on base and was 6-for-13 (.462) with runners in scoring position.
- The Pirates hit three home runs in a single inning for the first time since doing so in the bottom of the eighth in a 10-3 win over Memphis May 13, 2023 (Josh Moylan, Ryley Johnson and Carter Cunningham).
