May 03, 2024 | Softball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Emma Jackson hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third and East Carolina held off a late UAB rally as the Pirates defeated the Blazers 3-1 in the series opener on Friday evening at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.
Makenzie Mason went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI for the Pirates (37-16, 13-12 AAC) who recorded their sixth straight win.
After a quiet two innings, Kanisha Anderson got things going with a bunt to reach first and Jackson would crush a 2-2 ball over the right center wall to put the Pirates ahead 2-0.
ECU would tack on another run in the bottom of the fourth on a Mason single that scored Logan Sutton to give the Pirates all the momentum and a 3-0 lead going into the fifth.
The Blazers would get on the board in the top of the fifth with an RBI single but left a runner on second and third as ECU held on to a 3-1 lead.
UAB would put the pressure on the Pirates on more time, loading the bases in the top of the seventh but Addy Bullis would enter to record the final out and snuff out the Blazers' comeback attempt.
Taylor Apple (14-7) tossed two strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work for the win while Bullis picked up her second save of the season.
