GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women's basketball team is back out on the road on Saturday afternoon at Memphis. The game is set for a 3 p.m. tip on ESPN+ with Greg Gaston and Patosha Jeffery on the call.
The Pirates will be looking to build a bit of a win streak heading down the stretch of conference play with just over a month until the American Athletic Conference Tournament on March 8-12 in Fort Worth, Texas.
Last Time Out
The Pirates closed on a tear with a 20-8 run over the final 3:48 on Wednesday to earn a double-digit victory over Wichita State Three players—Amiya Joyner, Jayla Hearp and Anzhané Hutton—scored 15-or-more points in the game, with Hearp doing so in just 13 minutes played. Joyner recorded her eighth double-double of the season and in doing so surpassed 1,000 points scored.
Scouting Memphis
The Tigers enter the game with just a 4-15 mark on the year with a 2-6 record in league play as they come off of consecutive losses to Tulsa and Charlotte. Despite their record, the Tigers can score with four players averaging double-figure scoring paced by Tilly Boler's 17.1 and DeeDee Hagemann's 12.8. Alasia Smith averages near a double-double on the year with 11.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.
Series History
The Pirates and Tigers have had a thrilling recent history but a series dating back to 2002 as the old CUSA rivals have met over 40 times. ECU holds the edge 23-21, including a 65-63 thriller in the American Athletic Conference Tournament in which the team recorded an event-record 14 blocked shots led by Tatyana Wyche and Joyner who both posted double-doubles. Wyche blocked six shots by herself in the game, missing the conference tournament record by just one. Danae McNeal also contributed 19 points in the victory.
My Oh MyMy
With 17 points against Wichita State, Joyner has now eclipsed 1,000 career points. The junior is the 26th thousand-point scorer in program history and is just the second Pirate with 1,000 points and 100-or-more blocks (Marcia Girven).Â
Family Affair
Devin Hagemann gets a shot for bragging rights on Saturday as she faces off with her older sister DeeDee who is a senior guard for Memphis.
