Pirates Struggle at UAB in 5-2 Loss

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The East Carolina soccer team dropped a difficult 5-2 loss to UAB on Sunday at PNC Field. The Pirates took big swings at a comeback but were never able to climb the mountain back as the Blazers closed well to ice the game late.

UAB (4-4-6, 1-2-3 American) had the better of most of the first half, keeping the ball in their attacking half for much of the opening 45 minutes, and it finally paid off in the 37th minute when Avery Berryman slipped a ball through to Ava Mills in the 18 who just managed to finish past Olivia Dietrich.

The Blazers had a golden chance to double in the 40th minute when they earned a penalty kick. Abbey Burns took the opportunity but was denied by Dietrich who got it right to punch away the firm shot to the right side of the goal.

Dietrich made three saves in the first half alone including one more stop on a dangerous chance for Lailah Steward on a quick counter in the 45th minute to keep the margin at one into the halftime break.

UAB doubled their lead in the 47th minute when Mia Leath settled the ball and finished easily after a scramble in the box. The goal was reviewed for a potential handball but ultimately stood.

The Pirates (5-5-3, 3-2-1 American) took a swing at a comeback in the second half. On two occasions, AJ Mayock scored goals to get the team within one. On both occasions, UAB quickly responded with goals from the boot of Lailah Stewart. It was a rollercoaster stretch which saw both Mayock's first career brace, the hope of getting within one, and the frustration of seeing the game slip away again.

Stewart added a third goal in the waning minutes for the final margin.

To add insult to the loss, Caitlen-Star Dolan Boodram was shown a red card in the 86th minute which will cause the star forward to miss the Pirates' next game.
