Pirates Make Final Eight Shots, Run Away from UNC Asheville, 75-61
December 14, 2025 | Women's Basketball
GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's basketball used a strong final quarter to run away from UNC Asheville for a 75-61 win on Sunday afternoon in Minges Coliseum. Taylor Barner and Keanna Rembert led the team with 20 and 19 points, respectively.
The Pirates (6-5) and Bulldogs (3-8) traded blows for much of the game which featured 10 lead changes and eight ties. The hosts weathered the best of what UNC Asheville had to offer in the first half, going down by as many as seven points without wavering. The visitors knocked in six three point shots in that first half while ECU struggled with an 0-8 clip from behind the arc.
In the second half, the Pirates were able to go up by six, only to see their lead vanish. D'yanna Maxey drilled a three pointer from near mid court at the third-quarter buzzer to cut the margin to three, allowing UNC Asheville to take the lead briefly a few minutes into the fourth on a pair of Aileen Marquez free throws.Â
From there, ECU took charge. A 9-0 run gave the team a lead they would not relinquish. Barner posted a game-high 11 points in the final period, nearly outscoring the Bulldogs' 14 points herself. The rookie was perfect in the quarter, 4-4 from the field and 2-2 from the foul line along with a made three-point shot from the 'P' of the center court Pirates logo. She was electric and managed to, along with an exciting seven points from Kennedy Fauntleroy, get the crowd back into the game and take any remaining momentum away from UNC Asheville.
The Pirates went on to make their final eight field goal of the game, including a pair of Fauntleroy steals and scores in the final minute, to blow the game open for the final 14-point margin. Fauntleroy finished the game with nine points and a game highs of five assists and steals.
Despite doing it quietly, Keanna Rembert starred in the game with her 19 points nad five rebounds. It was undoubtedly her best game in an ECU uniform so far and was an efficient outing with a 7-11 effort from the field.
As a team, the Pirates shot 26-29 from the foul line, making the most of their opportunities in a physical game. The 89.7 percent clip was the best on 25-or-more makes for the program since at least 2000. On the other side of the ball, the team forced 24 turnovers in the game and scored 28 points off of them. It was the ninth time in 11 games forcing 20-or-more turnovers.
Oddly, ECU made more free throws (26) than field goals (23) in the game. It was the first time that had happened since Jan. 20, 2024 in a win over SMU.
