Pirates Suffer 83-66 Defeat to JMU
December 03, 2025 | Women's Basketball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women's basketball team lost to James Madison, 83-66, on Wednesday evening in Minges Coliseum. The Pirates were led in scoring by Kennedy Fauntleroy's 17 points.
Â
The Pirates (4-5) got out to a great start with a 10-0 run in the opening frame, paced by nine by Fauntleroy in the first quarter alone. The team lead by as many as eight but saw runs of 6-0 and 14-0 by James Madison (7-4) turn the game on its head with a 40-23 margin at the end of the latter spurt. During that run, ECU suffered a drought of 4:42 without scoring. The hosts did not make a field goal in the second until the 1:51 mark, a Savannah Brooks three-point basket.
Â
Peyton McDaniel starred in the game for JMU but did so in unusual fashion. She did not score in the first or fourth quarters but finished with 22 points. McDaniel shot 6-9 from three-point range, leading the Dukes to nine made threes as a team.
Â
The second quarter was ultimately the point at which the game came apart for ECU to the tune of a 30-11 margin on the scoreboard. JMU took a 15-point lead in the break before using another 13-1 run to push the lead over 20 points for the first time, 64-43. Simultaneously, ECU missed eight consecutive field goals, turning in a drought of 6:09 without a make from the floor.
Â
McDaniel scored 14 of her 22 points in the third quarter but was not alone in her offensive efforts as four JMU players scored in double figures in the game. Two other players just missed out on that double-figure barrier, including Delilah Soltys who went a perfect 3-3 from the field and made two important threes over the course of the Dukes opening up their lead.
Â
The Pirates got within 12 points in the fourth quarter only to see the margin pushed back over 20. It seemed as if each time ECU made a run to make the game interesting, JMU had a timely answer. Much of the Dukes' success game from their dominance on the boards, out rebounding ECU by a massive margin, 48-26.
Â
Still, there was a bright spot for the Pirates which deserves a mention: with a layup at the 9:03 mark of the third quarter, senior guard Savannah Brooks scored her 1,000th career point. She has scored 97 points in Purple and Gold following her 14-point effort outing on Wednesday.
