GREENVILLE, N.C. – Postseason play gets officially underway on Sunday evening as the seventh-seeded East Carolina women's basketball team takes on the 10th-seeded Memphis Tigers at 7 p.m. ET in Dickies Arena for what is officially second round of the American Athletic Conference Tournament. The game will be available for streaming on ESPN+ with Tiffany Greene and Brooke Weisbrod on the call as the Pirates look to make yet another deep run in the conference championships.
Last Time Out
The Pirates saw their regular season end on a sour note with a blowout loss to UTSA at home on Tuesday. The Pirates were never in the game, trailing from the jump and going down by as many as 28 points in the game. Jordyn Jenkins was dominant on the day with 26 points and six rebounds on 11-14 from the field, including making her first nine shots. Jayla Hearp was the only Pirate in double figures with 10 points.
Scouting Memphis
The Tigers enter the game on a four game skid with a 7-22 overall record and a 5-13 mark in league play. The team does have five players averaging more than 10 points per game, led by Tilly Boler's 17.0. In the post. Alasia Smith runs at a near double-double clip with 11.2 points and 8.9 rebounds per game on the season.
Series History
The Tigers earned a hard fought win over the Pirates in the teams' first meeting of the season, 75-69, in Memphis. Anzhané Hutton put up 20 points for ECU in the game but it was not enough to overcome three different tiger players scoring 15-or-more, including Tanyuel Welch's 21 points and nine rebounds and Smith's 15-point, 10-rebound double-double. The result narrowed ECU's all-time series lead to 23-22 entering the tournament meeting.
Postseason Recognition
Amiya Joyner and Devin Hagemann picked up American postseason honors with Joyner garnering First Team All-Conference recognition while Hagemann nabbed a unanimous All-Freshman Team selection. Joyner has averaged 14.7 points and 9.0 blocks for the season while registering 50 assists, 33 steals and 30 blocked shots. For the third year in a row, Joyner has accumulated 13 double-doubles on the season—which ranks 26th in the NCAA and second in The American—and recently recorded her second career 20-rebound game. She is just the third player in program to accomplish that feat. Hagemann has stepped into the point guard spot as a rookie and excelled. In league play she's posted 7.0 points and 2.8 assists per game and has compiled a team-best 66 total assists on the year.
Something About March
The Pirates have enjoyed their stays in Fort Worth the last two seasons with a tournament title in 2023 and a run to the title game a season ago. It was the first time since 1991 and 1992 in which the team has played for a league title in consecutive seasons. ECU has never done so in three consecutive years.
It's Always Memphis
Sunday will make the fourth consecutive season in which East Carolina and Memphis have met in the AAC Tournament. The Pirates have won two-straight, including a 65-63 win a season ago in which Tatyana Wyche and Joyner both recorded double-doubles with Wyche grabbing a career-high 17 rebounds. Danae McNeal added 19 points in the victory.
