April 11, 2025 | Baseball
CHARLOTTE, N.C. ā Blake Gillespie threw eight scoreless innings to help lift Charlotte past East Carolina 6-0 Friday night in an American Athletic Conference series opener at Truist Field.
Ā
The 49ers (20-13, 7-3 AAC) held a 7-5 advantage in the hit column and clubbed a pair of home runs while the Pirates (20-15, 6-4 AAC) saw five different batters register a hit each.
Ā
Gillespie (5-3) scattered the five ECU hits and struck out 11 against just one walk to earn the victory. Ethan Norby (4-4) was saddled with the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Ā
Dawson Bryce paced the home side with two hits, two runs scored and two RBI while Logan Poteet also drove in a pair of runs and scored two. Braden Burress logged a hit and drew a walk at the top of the Pirate lineup.
Ā
A walk and hit by pitch to begin the bottom of the first put Charlotte in business as it would plate the game's first two runs via a Cody Gunderson RBI single and a fielder's choice that scored Noah Furcht from third.
Ā
The 49ers extended the lead to four in the home half of the fourth with a Poteet two-run home run and did not allow East Carolina much the rest of the way. A two spot in the sixth rounded out the evening as Gillespie spread out a double and three singles over the fourth through eighth frames before Joseph Taylor retired the Pirate side in order in the top of the ninth.
Ā
Up Next: ECU and Charlotte continue the series Saturday back on campus at the 49ers' Hayes Stadium.
