Ufodiama Makes History, Pirates Put Four Events on Podium on Final Day of American Championships
May 17, 2025 | Track & Field
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The East Carolina track & field team wrapped up the 2025 American Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday at Charlotte's Irwin Belk Track & Field Center with a ninth-place finish for the women and a 10th-place result for the men. The star of the show was Kelly Ufodiama again, turning in an historic final day of competition with two titles and hardware aplenty.
Â
The Pirates got off to a strong start in the field events to begin the day with Faith Spencer and Sashoy Benbow showing well in the women's triple jump and discus, respectively. Spencer, the program record holder in the event, snagged a fourth-place finish with a leap of 12.58m (41-3.25), just missing out on a podium spot. Meanwhile, Benbow used a season best on her second-to-last attempt to move into scoring position with a toss of 44.76m (146-10).
Â
On the men's side in the triple jump, Jared Harrell took home a seventh-place finish with a season-best mark of 15.00m (49-2.5). In the men's discus, Shakiel Dacres had a great showing with his third-place finish, using a mark of 55.29m (181-4) on his fifth attempt to make his way onto the podium.
Â
Onto the track, Abrielle Schweitzer started the day for the Pirates, turning in a seventh-place result in the 1,500m final with a time of 4:34.39.
Â
In the 100m hurdles final, Aaliyah Brown-Muhammad and Emma Hall ran stride-for-stride with each other for a 5-6 finish in 13.55 and 13.62 seconds, respectively. Hall would continue on to compete in the 400m hurdles final where she ran yet another personal record time in 59.73 to finish sixth.
Â
Then it was Ufodiama's turn with an 11.38 second effort in the 100m to claim a comfortable win in the event. She took the blocks in the 200m a short time later with history on the line and rose to the moment with poise. Her 22.69-second effort gave her another program record, a victory by 0.40 seconds and made her the first athlete in American Athletic Conference history to sweep all four short sprints in one year (indoor 60m, indoor 200m, outdoor 100m, outdoor 200m). For her efforts, Ufodiama once again earned Women's Most Valuable Performer and Freshman of the Year accolades, given to the athlete and true freshman who score the most points for their teams. She is the first athlete in conference history, man or woman, to sweep both awards indoors and outdoors since the Freshman of the Year award began in 2019.
Â
The Pirates got one last great run to cap of the weekend with the women's 4x400m squad earning another podium finish with the fourth-fastest time in program history in 3:37.57.
