
Barnhill Wins Fred Stabley Sr. Writing Contest District Award

GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina Assistant Director of Media Relations Cole Barnhill has one story chosen as a district winner in the 2024-25 Fred Stabley Sr. Writing Contest, College Sports Communicators has announced. Additionally, three of Barnhill's pieces have earned runners up recognition.

Representing District 3 which covers Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, Barnhill's piece "Victories, Moral and Otherwise: 30 Years of East Carolina Women's Soccer" was chosen as the best story in the Historical Feature category. The piece, released in September, chronicles the story of the founding of the East Carolina women's soccer program from its roots as a club team to a varsity sport in 1994.

That piece will now move on to the national ballot where it will be considered for national recognition, to be announced later in the month.

The Stabley Writing Contest recognizes the top writing and storytelling content in seven different categories (plus a category for undergraduate student writing entries) from current 2024-25 CSC members.

More than 110 articles written by College Sports Communicators members have been honored as district winners in the 2024-25 Fred Stabley Sr. Writing Contest.

CSC members in all eight districts submitted nearly 500 articles in seven categories. For the second straight year, the contest was split into University and College divisions, allowing the recognition of the work done by members from smaller offices and those who work on NCAA Division I staffs.
