
ECU Student-Athletes Earn Academic Accolades

IRVING, Texas – The East Carolina baseball and women's tennis teams have received American Conference Team Academic Excellence Awards for the 2024-25 school year, according to an announcement by the league Wednesday.

The Pirate baseball team earned the honor for an unprecedented tenth-straight season, while the women's tennis program was recognized for the second-consecutive year and third time overall. The award goes to the team with the highest annual grade point average in each sport the conference sponsors. Â

In addition to the baseball and women's tennis teams' recognition, a university-best 324 Pirate student-athletes were named to the 2024-25 American All-Academic Team, besting the previous mark of 314 at the end of the 2020-21 academic year. To be eligible for the honor, a nominee must have competed in an American Athletic Conference-sponsored sport, attained a minimum grade-point average of 3.00 for the preceding academic year, and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses.

On the heels of their fourth American Conference Tournament title and seventh-straight NCAA Regional appearance, the baseball team compiled a 3.72 cumulative grade point average in 2024-25 and has registered at 3.41 or higher GPA for the past eight academic cycles including a program-best this academic year. The previous watermark was set in 2020-21 with a 3.64 GPA. All 43-baseball student-athletes earned a spot on the All-Academic Team.

The women's tennis team registered a 3.82 cumulative mark as a group with nine of its 10 members earning inclusion on the All-Academic Team.
For the second year in a row, 10 Pirate squads put at least 80 percent of its roster on the American All-Academic team including baseball (43 of 43/100 percent), lacrosse (32 of 32/100 percent), men's golf (9 of 9/100 percent), women's golf (10 of 10/100 percent), swimming and diving (26 of 28/92.9 percent), women's tennis (9 of 10/90 percent), softball (20 of 23/87 percent), volleyball (16 of 19/84.2 percent), men's cross country (10 of 12/83.3 percent) and women's basketball (12 of 15/80 percent).
Nominations for the All-Academic Team are submitted by each of the American Athletic Conference's member institutions. They are then reviewed and approved by the American Athletic Conference Academic Affairs Committee.
