GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina soccer team resumes action after a 10-day break as they travel to Denton, Texas for a conference match with North Texas. The game is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday and will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
Â
What's at Stake
The Pirates will look to bounce back from a 1-0 loss as South Florida and in so doing will look to get back to .500 on the season. A win would put the team back in the hunt with six points in league play and will provide a rare and all-important conference road win. The game will also be a chance for ECU to reset the season after a long break and a needed rest as the American Conference dives into the heart of conference play.
Scouting North Texas
The Mean Green enter the game with a 4-7-1 record and an 0-2-0 mark in league play after a tough 3-2 defeat against Charlotte on Thursday evening. North Texas struck first and again managed to level the score at two apiece on a Rachel Roebuck penalty, but the 49ers snagged the three points with a PK of their own in the 73rd minute from Amelia Brown. For the year, Mia Bernard's 12 points on four goals and as many assists paces the team while eight other players have tallied goals. Three players have gotten work in goal with Alina Arneth earning the most minutes and the highest save percentage at .750.Â
Series History
The Pirates and Mean Green have met twice, both since North Texas joined the American Conference with a 1-0-1 mark for ECU. The first match was a thrilling 2-2 draw in Denton in which the Pirates erased a two-goal deficit to steal a result with Samantha Moxie and Abby Sowa scoring goals in the second half. Last season, the Pirates won 3-0 with a brace from Sydney Schnell and a PK from Abby Sowa.

The Woman in Charge
After seven seasons as an assistant, Emily Buccilla takes the reins as head coach in 2025. She is the first female head coach in program history.
Pirates in the Pros
Two recent East Carolina alumnae have recently signed professional contracts with Maeve English joining AO Rethymniaki Enosi Athliton on the isle of Crete, competing in the Greek Division A. Meanwhile, Abby Sowa inked a contract with Rekord Bielsko-Biała in Poland's Orlen Superliga. Notably, Sowa will be competing in the same league as former Pirate teammate Kim Sanford.
Home Sweet Home
The Pirates play their home contests in one of the most beautiful soccer facilities in Division I in Bill Clark Homes Field at Johnson Stadium. Recently outfitted with a new scoreboard and state-of-the-art LED lighting, the venue is a great place to watch a game whether it's an early season matinee or a conference thriller under the lights. Pirate Nation has played their part of late, too. Five of the top 10 attended games in program history have come since head coach Emily Buccilla arrived in Greenville with three coming in just the past three seasons, including the all-time record of 1,335 attendees when the Pirates hosted then-No. 2 Duke in 2022.
