Pirates Down Tulane on the Road, 65-61
February 10, 2026 | Women's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The East Carolina women's basketball team used a strong fourth quarter to pull away from the Tulane Green Wave for a 65-61 win in Devlin Fieldhouse on Tuesday evening. The Pirates erased a halftime deficit for a win for the seventh time in American Conference play to win their 10th conference game for just the 10th time in program history.
Â
The Pirates have now won eight of their last nine and 14 of their last 16. Their 10-2 conference record is the best start through a dozen games since 1991-92 when the team finished 12-2 in the CAA.
Â
The first half of the game, from the perspective of a casual viewer, was terrific. Despite a slow start from both offenses, it was a back-and-forth battle befitting a mid-February conference affair.
Â
The Pirates (18-8, 10-2 American) were twice able to go up by four points in the first quarter thanks in part to some stout defensive play. Anzhané Hutton had a hand in that, notching a new season high for blocks in a game with three in just the first 2:32 of game time. Despite not scoring, Hutton contributed greatly in the first half with her six rebounds and three assists to go along with the rejections. The forward finished her day with eight points and a season-high matching 13 rebounds while also tying her career high with four blocks.
Â
Tulane (8-15, 3-8 American) used an 8-0 run in the second quarter to take a four-point lead at 25-21 and force an ECU timeout. Out of the pause, Kennedy Fauntleroy scored to end a drought of nearly three minutes for the Pirates only for Mecailin Marshall to drill a three on the other end. Marshall had a brilliant first game which she kicked off with 14 points in the first 20 minutes of the game. The freshman finished the day with a career- and game-high 34 points, more than half of her team's total points.
Â
As is the signature of the program, the Pirates were aided in staying in the game by their defense in the first half, forcing 13 turnovers with seven coming off of steals. Meanwhile, Tulane was able to fund success thanks to an onslaught from behind the arc on tremendous efficiency, shooting 5-9 from three. The teams entered halftime separated by a point, Tulane leading it, 33-32.
Â
The second half began like a yo-yo with a 7-1 run for ECU followed by a 6-0 run for Tulane to essential reset the game at the third quarter's midpoint, the hosts having retaken their one-point lead. During that period, both teams struggled with stretches of nearly four minutes without a made field goal. After shooting the lights out in the first half from deep, Tulane missed all five of their attempts from deep in the third quarter and shot just 2-10 from three in the second half.
Â
Keanna Rembert grabbed an offensive rebound and tossed in a putback from the right block to beat the buzzer and give ECU a 48-46 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Â
The Pirates kept it rolling into the final frame with a 9-0 run to open the period for an extending 11-straight points across the two quarters. The Green Wave did not score until the 5:22 mark when Amira Mabry converted an and-one on a nice out of bounds set.
Â
Leading by double figures for a large period down the stretch, ECU suffered from a brief moment of discipline woes with a personal foul and a technical with 31 seconds remaining. After four free throws, this snafu was worsened by a Tulane triple from Marshall making it just a four-point final margin. However, that bucket game with just 13 seconds remaining, and being able to run out much of the remaining clock, the visitors did enough for what was the first road win against Tulane in 11 years for the Pirates.
Â
The team was led in scoring by Fauntleroy's 23 points with Savannah Brooks and Rembert joining in double figures.
