Last Time Out
The Pirates roared back from 15 down to force overtime with an Anzhané Hutton buzzer beater at Memphis before eventually falling, 88-80, in double overtime. The team was led in scoring by Taylor Barner who had 19 points for her highest scoring outing since Dec. 30. Kennedy Fauntleroy flirted with a triple-double with 14 points, nine assists and seven rebounds while Hutton recorded her third-straight double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Scouting Charlotte
The 49ers enter the game at 13-15 and 7-8 in American Conference play after downing Florida Atlantic, 57-56, in their last outing as Tanajah Hayes sank a three-point shot with 2.5 seconds remaining to win it. On the year, Charlotte is paced by Princess Anderson's 14.9 points per game while Hayes also averages double-figures scoring with 11.4. Hayes also leads the team in assists with 5.5 per game which ranks 20th nationally. Asianae Nicholson leads the team on the glass with 9.5 boards per game to go with her 6.4 points. As a team, the 49ers are top 50 in the NCAA in rebounds per game thanks in large part to being fifth nationally on the offensive glass with 17.3 offensive rebounds per game.
Series History
The Pirates and 49ers have met 41 times dating back to 1983 with ECU taking its 15th win of the series earlier this season with a 67-61 result on Jan. 30 in the Queen City. Kennedy Fauntleroy went for 21 points, five assists and six steals in the win to lead all scorers as Tanajah Hayes put up 15 points to lead Charlotte. The Pirates trailed for much of the early going of the game but used a 19-10 fourth quarter to take the game over and earn the victory.
ECU versus...
ECU is 88-111 all time in American Conference regular season play and 45-59 in the McNeill era. ECU is 126-152 all time in games against current members of the American Conference.
ECU is 224-150 all time against schools from the state of North Carolina and 18-10 in the McNeill era.
Memphis Game Notables
- ECU has made multiple three-point shots in 36 consecutive games dating back to Feb. 15, 2025 vs. Charlotte.
- ECU has made 167 three-point shots this season, seventh in program history and just one away from sixth.
- ECU is now 0-2 when playing last place conference teams this season.

National Rankings
Through 27 games, the Pirates rank 22nd in the NCAA in free throws made per game (15.28), 23rd in turnover margin (+5.76), 21st in turnovers forced per game (21.07), 46th in steals per game (10.4). Individually, Kennedy Fauntleroy ranks 23rd in the nation in steals with 79. This ranks first in the American Conference. Fauntleroy is also 39th nationally in assists with 138.
Something More Than Free
The Pirates have made 443 free throws this season on a 73.2 percent clip. If it holds, that would be a program record percentage (72.0 in 2013-14). It is the 10th most total free throws made in program history.
Senior Class
The Pirates have now won 79 games in the last four seasons, tied for second in a four-year span in program history (79 from 2012-2016). The program record stands at 80 from 1977-81, meaning that with two more wins, the class of Jayla Hearp and Bobbi Smith would become the winningest four-year class in program history.
At the Helm
2025-26 is the Pirates' seventh under the tutelage of Kim McNeill. The program has a 107-101 record under her leadership.
McNeill is the fourth coach in program history with multiple 20-win seasons (Cathy Andruzzi, Emily Manwaring, Heather Macy).
With the Temple win, McNeill passed Cathy Andruzzi to move into fourth on the program's career wins list. She now has 107, one away from moving into the top three all time. Heather Macy (134), Sharon Baldwin-Tener (126) and Catherine Bolton (108) hold the top three spots.
Reclaim
Each season the Pirates choose an important word, meaningful to the team, to put on the back of their practice jerseys. In 2025-26, the team chose the word "Reclaim", signifying the group's goals after a turbulent 2024-25 of returning to their roots as a defensive minded team, getting back to their standards as role models in the community and striving for excellence in the classroom.
