The 2018-19 season marks John Newell’s second year as the assistant coach at ECU.

A native of Charlotte, NC and four-year letterman at NC State, Newell joined the ECU coaching staff as an assistant prior to the start of the 2017-18 campaign after spending the previous two years coaching with the YOTA Swim Team in Raleigh.
As an assistant coach and site director at the YMCA of the Triangle/YOTA Swim Team, Newell tutored numerous YMCA National Championship qualifiers as well as N.C. Senior and age group state championship qualifiers.
As a senior at NC State, Newell earned All-America honors as a member of the 400-medley relay team and led the Wolfpack to their first ACC title in 23 years. He graduated ranked among the school's all-time top-10 in the 50 Freestyle as well as the 100 and 200 Butterfly.
He also competed in the 200 Butterfly in the 2012 Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb.
Newell received his bachelor's degree in sport management from NC State in 2015.
