John King joined the ECU Athletics staff as the Director of Compliance in November 2022.Â
Â
King will have oversight of eligibility certification, amateurism, and transfer processes as well as provide rules education, research and interpretation responses for all bylaws for coaches, student-athletes, department staff, donors, and outside constituents. In his role, he works closely with all 18 sports, and will serve as a liaison to ECU admissions, Student-Athlete Academic Services, Registrar’s Office, and Global Affairs. He will also serve as a member of the NIL Taskforce and ACE Team (Academics, Compliance, and Eligibility), and be the designated contact for the NCAA Transfer Portal and NCAA Eligibility Center. Â

King returns to ECU from Coastal Carolina University, where he was most recently the Director of Compliance. In that role, he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the compliance office including researching rule interpretations, researching/submitting NCAA and conference waivers, oversight of the initial and continuing eligibility process, monitoring recruiting activity, and monitoring other rules related to playing and practice seasons. He also prepared rules education sessions for coaches and student-athletes.

Prior to his time at Coastal Carolina, King was an Assistant Director of Compliance at East Carolina, where he oversaw all aspects of eligibility and amateurism certification from 2018-2021. He also completed a compliance graduate assistantship at Weber State University and a compliance internship at Syracuse University.

King is a member of the National Associate of Athletics Compliance (NAAC) and was recently selected as a committee member for the NAAC Education Committee beginning September 2023.Â
King is a native of Stuarts Draft, VA and a graduate of Syracuse University, where he was a Phanstiel Scholar and received his bachelor’s degree in Broadcast and Digital Journalism in 2016. He also earned his Master of Business Administration from Weber State University. He enjoys cooking and playing the occasional pick-up basketball/volleyball game.
