ECU Women Defeat Rival UNCW 1-0
October 30, 2002 | Soccer
The sole goal of the game came off a chip from senior Unicity Dittmer at 38:02, which centered inside the 18, where senior Amanda Duffy got a foot on it and kicked it into the lower right corner of the net. The Pirates (10-4-4, 6-2-3) outshot UNCW, 20-12.
The two teams battled for possession and shots in the second half, but ECU came out strong with nine shots and limited UNCW (10-7-1) to only three in the half.
Defensively Michelle Kmiotek made four saves for the Pirates and UNCW's goal keeper Tiffany Lanford made eight on the day.
"We set some goals every year," said Head Coach Rob Donnenwirth. "To beat UNCW, be undefeated at home and to be in the top five of Conference USA, so far so good. It says a lot for the team, they set goals and have worked hard to get there. In today's game I felt we had good control, except in counter attacks and that is where they are very dangerous. Duffy had a good goal, I thought we could have had a couple more."
ECU takes the road to face Elon, Saturday, November 2, and then heads on to the Conference USA tournament in Charlotte next week. The Pirates will open tournament play on Wednesday, November 6, against an opponent to be decided.
