The win was Elon's first-ever women's soccer defeat of East Carolina. The series now stands at 5-1 in favor of the Pirates.
The Phoenix (6-9-1) got on the board first when senior Lauren Kast scored her first marker of the season in the 20th minute on assists from Kate Shabo and Natalie Sampson. ECU (10-5-4) would keep the pressure on throughout the remainder of the half and evened the score in the 44th minute when Mindy Nixon scored unassisted. The Pirates outshot Elon 10-5 in the first frame, but settled for the 1-1 tie at the break.
The second half saw another flurry of shots with ECU again holding the edge 11-4. But the only shot that found the back of the net in the period was the one off the foot of Elon's Kerry McCarron. McCarron took a rebound off ECU keeper Michelle Kmiotek and scored the game-winner. Schabo tallied the assist.
In net for Elon, Beth O'Connor recorded three saves and allowed the lone Pirate goal in playing the first 45:00 in her final game at Rudd Field. Lindsi Troxler finished out the game as the keeper for Elon, recording four saves. Kmiotek tallied three saves for ECU.
"We really didn't play with a lot of urgency until we needed it," said Head Coach Rob Donnenwirth said after today's loss. "They took better advantage of their chances and we did not."
The Pirates are seeded third for next week's Conference USA tournament and head to Charlotte for Wednesday's opening-round game.
