Women's Soccer Falls in Preseason Scrimmage
August 18, 2002 | Soccer
The Lady Monarchs shut out the Lady Pirates in the first two 45-minute halves. ECU received its only goal of the scrimmage in the additional 30-minute third period when freshman Melissa Penney found the net.
Laura Beeman was the first of the three Lady Monarch freshmen to score a goal in the game in the 24th minute. Beeman picked up a rebound off a blocked cross from fellow freshman Kim Snyder and shot it right over the outstretched arm of Lady Pirate goalie Mindy Kmiotek, also a freshman.
Heather Vaughan netted her own goal just six minutes later. Sophomore Maura Linz sent a corner kick across the goalie box and Vaughan out-jumped everyone to put in the easy header. Meredith Worsley scored the final goal as the ECU defense overplayed a long cross which she was able to control and net.
Sophomore Stephanie Miller and junior transfer Kristen Bailey combined to make 10 saves and keep East Carolina off the scoreboard in the regulation game. The Lady Pirates' Amanda Duffy, an All-Conference USA pick last season, broke open with several opportunities to score but couldn't find the back off the net.
ECU opens its regular season on Friday, August 30, at home against High Point (4 p.m.). Coach Rob Donnenwirth's team will be trying to improve upon last season's 10-8-1 record.
