Women's Soccer Ties DePaul 1-1 In Double Overtime

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The East Carolina women's soccer team recorded its second tie of the weekend as they played DePaul to a, 1-1, double overtime match Sunday afternoon at Bunting Field.
The Pirates (6-4-4, 2-1-3) fell behind early in the match when DePaul's Julianne Sitch received the ball at the midfield and broke away for the goal. She placed a shot just over the left shoulder of Pirate goalkeeper Lindsi Troxler at the 20:25 mark, to take a 1-0 lead. DePaul (9-4-1, 4-1-1) took that lead into the half.
The Pirates would come back with a game-tying goal at the 56-minute mark when Melissa Penney found Penny Perrott in the goal box off a corner kick. Penney's placement was just off the top of the box and Perrott was able to jump up and head the ball in, for her third goal of the season.
Just before the end of regulation, ECU's Sarah Stoltz had an opportunity at the game-winning goal, when her shot from 20-yards out hit the crossbar.
In overtime periods, it seemed the momentum was in the Pirates favor as they controlled the ball a majority of the time. Pirate sophomore Meghan McCallion had two shots on goal that just missed giving ECU the win. At the 91:03 mark, her shot from 18-yards out, also hit the cross bar, and in the 108th-minute she narrowly missed another shot that went wide right.
"There were good opportunities for both teams to score today," said ECU head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "Julianne Sitch is a dynamite player and no matter what you do, she is all over the field. It is tough to keep an eye on her for 90 minutes. DePaul is a tough team and this was a tough battle this afternoon. We had our chances to win today and so did DePaul. Overall, we need to find a way to score some goals. I think we are a little snake bitten right now in goal scoring. We just need to take care of our chances and we'll get better."
The Pirates return to action Friday, Oct. 10 at 10:30 a.m. when they take on the Miami Hurricanes at Bunting Field.
