ECU Women's Soccer Battles Miami to 2-2 Tie
October 17, 2003 | Soccer
"I thought it was a hard-fought match with a lot of momentum changes," ECU head coach Rob Donnenwirth said. "I didin't think we started off very well, but we came out in the second half, applied pressure and scored a couple of goals. We didn't take advantage of our chances when we could have made it 3-1, but you have to give Miami credit for coming back and tying it up."
ECU trailed at halftime 1-0 after Ta's second goal of the season in the 22nd minute. She found a ball in traffic and beat the goalie on the far post with a shot from six yards.
The Lady Pirates rallied in the second half with two goals of their own. After a Miami foul gave ECU a free kick, Penney took the direct kick and sailed a shot from 30 yards over the head of Hurricane keeper Alex Alford in the 61st minute. McCallion's 10th goal of the season gave the Lady Pirates a 2-1 lead in the 66th minute. Rachel Hils took a long shot from around 35 yards out. Alford knocked the ball down, but couldn't coral it. McCallion knocked the ball just over the goal line for the score.
Sanguinetti tied the game for the Hurricanes in the 84th minute. Caitlin Oyler served a ball into the box and Sanguinetti headed it far post for the goal.
East Carolina and Miami both took 13 shots in 110 minutes. ECU sophomore goalkeeper Lindsi Troxler recorded three saves in 90 minutes before being relieved by freshman keeper Kari McCullough in the two overtimes. McCullough had two saves in 20 minutes and didn't allow a goal.
Alford finished with eight saves in 110 minutes for the Hurricanes. ECU held the advantage on corner kicks, 6-4.
The Lady Pirates hit the road for three straight conference games. ECU travels to Marquette Sunday for a 2 p.m. contest.
