
Softball Earns Two Wins In Day One Of Pirate Classic

In the morning game, ECU took on Fordham and won by a score of 6-3. Fordham took and early lead in the game, going up 3-0 in the first inning. Laura Curley reached first base on an error, and then Maggie Lingo walked the next two Ram betters to load the bases. Michelle Schlichting reached on a fielder's choice to the pitcher, as Lingo threw out the runner at home. Next up was Jamie Dautel, who doubled to right field, clearing the bases for the 3-0 advantage. Jamie Chastain was the final batter for Fordham in the inning, and grounded out the second baseman, sending East Carolina to the plate.
The Pirates first run came in the second inning when Brandi Benedict drove in Krista Jessup on a single to center field. Benedict was called out just moments later for leaving first base too early in an attempt to steal.
East Carolina scored its next four runs in the third inning. With runners on second and third, Christine Sheridan doubled to left field, sending in the first two runs of the inning. Then, with Sheridan on second, Kate Manuse went yard over the center field wall to put East Carolina up 5-3.
In the fifth, with runners again on second and third, Jessup drove in the final run of the game, to give ECU the 6-3 win.
Maggie Lingo was credited with the win for East Carolina, improving to 1-1 on the season. She allowed three hits and three runs and struck out three batters.
Manuse and Jessup went 2-for-3 in the game, and newcomer Lacassa Hill went 3-for-4 for the Pirates. Sheridan and Manuse each had two RBI in the outing.
In the Pirates' second game of the day, the women defeated St. John's 3-0. All three of the Pirates' runs came in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Jessup reached base when the Red Storm pitcher over threw the first baseman, sending all three runners home, and advancing Jessup to second. The inning ended on a fly out to center field by Dany'ele Hill.
Brently Bridgeforth earned the win doe ECU, allowing only two hits, and striking out four batters. She improved to 2-1 on the season.
East Carolina will face Fairfield tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. at D.H. Conley High School. and then take on Delaware at 1 p.m. at the ECU Softball Field.
