March 14, 2003 | Softball
With the pair of victories, East Carolina improved to 13-8 overall this season, while Elon dropped to 9-9.
In game one, ECU's Maggie Lingo scattered eight hits and struck two as she tossed a complete game shutout. The Pirates gave Lingo all the run support she needed in fourth as Dany'ele Hill singled through the middle to plate Chrystal Carter. They added an insurance run in the sixth as Brandi Benedict stroked a base hit through the left side of the infield to score Krista Jessup, who led off the frame with a double.
Game two began with East Carolina plating two runs in the first inning. Stacey Smith drove in a run and scored a run in the frame as she tripled to right field, plating the first run, and later scored on a wild pitch. Lacassa Smith led off the frame with a walk and then swiped second base to move into scoring position and brought home the game's first run.
Elon answered back with a run of its own in the second Danielle Concepcion scored on an errant throw during a rundown at third base. Christina Melton then homered to tie the game at 2-2 in the sixth.
The Phoenix took the lead in the top half of the eighth as Jessica Swearengin scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
Brentley Bridgeworth picked up the victory in second game, tossing a complete game four-hitter with a pair of strikeouts.
The Pirates return to action on Saturday against Conference USA rival Charlotte. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the ECU Softball Field.
