
ECU Softball Falls In Final Game to Bulls

The Bulls (21-4, 3-0 CUSA) scored five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 6-0 lead. With one out, Renee Oursler and Krista Holle reached base on errors. Shelly Riker loaded the bases with a bunt single to third base. Kattrina Dowd cleared the bases with a double off the right field wall. Stephanie Roberts then drew a walk. Dowd scored on a wild pitch, and Roberts came to the plate on a single by Courtney Lewellen.
The Bulls added two runs in the third inning. Holly Groves led off the inning with a solo homerun to left center field. For Groves, this was the second home run of the season. Christie Chapman reached base on an error, and moved to second on an overthrow. Chapman scored on an RBI single by Krista Holle.
In the fourth, the Bulls added one more run for a 9-0 lead. Carmela Liwag singled to start the inning. Rachel Williams then reached first on a ground ball that forced Liwag out at second. Williams eventually scored on an error.
ECU extended the game in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs off of a hit by Christine Sheridan which brought in Krista Jessup and Brandi Benedict. The Pirates used two singles, and a double to the center field wall to get across the runs, and send the game into the sixth. Rounding out the hits was Dany'ele Hill with two and Krista Jessup with two.
The Bulls finished the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Courtney Lewellen led off the inning with a single up the middle. Rachel Williams then singled to right center field, moving Lewellen to third. Christie Chapman hit a grounder to third, forcing Lewellen out on the play. Williams scored from second on a double to the gap in left center by Krista Holle.
On the day Brittany Boyd (2-1) pitched two innings to 11 hitters, had one strike out, allowed four hits and eight runs. Katie Dugger (3-0) picked up the win in relief of Leigh Ann Ellis. Dugger pitched the final three innings of the game, allowing three hits while striking out three.
The Pirates continue their road trip Tuesday at 2 p.m. against Coastal Carolina.
