
Softball Takes Two From Liberty

GREENVILLE, N.C.. ? The East Carolina University softball team defeated Liberty this afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader by scores of 1-0 and 7-0. The games were played at the ECU Softball Field on the East Carolina campus.
Game one was primarily a pitchers' duels as neither team got a hit until the fifth inning when Krista Jessup singled to right center for the first hit of the game. The Pirates, however, were unable to score in the fifth.
It was in the seventh inning that East Carolina put its one and only needed run on the board to win the game. Kristen Johnson led off in the bottom of the seventh and tripled to right center field. Christine Sheridan was next up to the plate, and she batted in Johnson to win the game.
Brently Bridgeforth earned the win for the Pirates, improving her record to 9-10 on the season. Bridgeforth pitched a no-hitter, allowed only two walks in the game, and struck out three batters. Ali Thompson was credited with the loss for Liberty; she drops to 7-17 on the year.
The Pirates had three total hits in the game In the second game of the afternoon, the Pirates defeated Liberty 7-0. East Carolina got on the board early, scoring one run in the bottom of the first. The run again came on a hit from Sheridan sending Johnson across home plate.
ECU scored one more run in the second inning when Mandi Nichols made it safely home on a Liberty error. The Pirates would score two more in the third inning to make the score 4-0.
The Pirates final three runs came in the fifth inning on doubles by Lacassa Hill and Johnson, and a single up the middle by Sheridan.
East Carolina had 15 hits in the outing, while Liberty had only three. Brittany Boyd received the win for ECU. She is now 7-6 on the year. Boyd allowed three hits, and one walk. Brtiney Morris was credited with the loss for Liberty. She drops to 6-6 on the year.
The Pirates will be in action again this weekend when they take on Southern Miss in a three-game conference series. Games one and two will take place on Saturday, April 26 at 1 p.m. CT, while game three will be played at noon CT on Sunday, April 27.
