Ashley Brenan scored pinch runner Kim Bishop in the sixth on a double to left center to account for USM's final tally.
Kristen Johnson and Brandi Benedict added a hit each for the Pirates. Brently Bridgeforth (9-11) took the loss, pitching 3.2 innings with four hits, three earned runs, two walks and five strikeouts.
In the second game, Boyd blasted her second home of the day and Heather Bell was 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Boyd ended the scoring with her solo bomb in the sixth. Bishop picked up her second run of the day, crossing the plate on a wild pitch in the fourth.
Huerta tripled in the second to start the scoring for Southern Miss, as Brenan scored on the play. Bell followed with a single up the middle to plate Huerta.
