April 29, 2003 | Softball
GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Brentley Bridgeforth and Brittany Boyd combined on a three-hit shutout to give East Carolina a 4-0 victory over UNC Wilmington in game one of a doubleheader here Tuesday. UNCW limited ECU to just four hits in game two and defeated ECU, 3-1, to earn a split.
ECU (21-31) collected five hits in game one with three of those coming in the third inning. With the Pirates already leading 1-0, Lara Brickhouse and Lacassa Hill recorded back-to-back singles to start the frame. After the next two batters were retired, Kate Manuse blasted a three-run home run, her seventh of the season, to give the duo of Bridgeforth and Boyd more than enough run support.
Bridgeforth (10-12) picked up the win for ECU, allowing just three hits in six innings. Boyd worked a perfect seventh and struck out one. Amanda Wilson (11-16) took the lose for the Seahawks.
In game two, UNC Wilmington (21-34) used four Pirate errors to claim a two-run victory. The Seahawks plated their first run in the third after Summer Chriscoe reached via an error. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt, Chriscoe came around to score on a pair of wild pitches by ECU starter Maggie Lingo (4-13).
The Pirates tied up the game in the bottom of the fifth as Manuse singled through the right side to score Hill.
UNCW regained the lead in the sixth, putting together a two-out rally. With runners at first and second, Christine Freany singled to center to plate Christina Elmore. The Seahawks then added an insurance run in the top of the seventh.
Jamie Gostyla (9-16) earned the win, allowing just one unearned run on four hits in seven innings of work. Lingo suffered the loss after allowing two runs -one earned- on four hits in 5.2 innings.
ECU returns to action Saturday, May 3, against Conference USA foe Saint Louis. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the ECU Softball Field.
