
Pirates Bring Home Two First Place Finishes From Clemson Invitational

CLEMSON, S.C. --- The East Carolina men's and women's track team competed today at the Clemson Invitational held at the Rock Norman Track Complex. The men's field included competitors from Appalachian State, Charlotte, Clemson and Iowa State. The women's field included Appalachian State, Charlotte, Clemson, Iowa State and Miami (OH).
The Lady Pirates finished fifth with a total of 41.25 points on the day. Sophomore Krystel Pabey won the javelin throw with an NCAA qualifying distance (46.71m, 153'03.00) and set a new ECU varsity record.
In other field events Jennifer Aull placed fourth in the hammer throw (45.09m, 147'11.00) and Star Coppin placed fifth in the triple jump (12.09m, 39'08.00). Tammie Mentzel placed fourth in the pole vault (3.51m, 10'06.25) and Nicole Marchewka placed sixth (3.06m, 10'00.50).
On the track Demiko Picott placed third in the 100-meter dash (12.42) and Terri Davenport placed fourth in the 400m (55.98).
In the distance events Tara DeBerielle placed fourth in the 800m (2:17.14) and Kelli Litten took third in the 5000m (20:00.75).
The men placed fifth with 45 points. All-American B.J. Henderson won the 200-meter dash with an NCAA qualifying time (21.07). Domonick Richmond placed second in the 400m (46.98) and Michael Hillian earned seventh place (48.52).
From the distance corp, Jamal Nisbett took second in the 800m (1:53.11) and Ricky Bell placed fifth (1:54.89). Kyle MacKenzie earned fifth place in the 3000m (9:43.54).
Ronnie Pollard broke the ECU varsity record he previously set in the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.27. Pat Martin followed him in sixth place by (53.47).
Devon Carter won the hammer throw for the Pirates (52.80m, 173'03.00). Mayso Porch took fifth place (47.92m, 157'03.00).
The Pirates return to action next weekend at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn.
