GREENVILLE, N.C. ? East Carolina's softball team defeated Saint Louis here Saturday in both games of a doubleheader by the score of 2-1 in each contest.
In game one, the Pirates got on the board early in the bottom of the first. After a Kristen Johnson single to left, designated player Kate Manuse hit a towering home run over the right field scoreboard, giving to Pirates an early 2-0 lead.
The Billikens were unable to answer until the top of the fifth. Saint Louis center fielder Adrienne May singled to left and eventually scored on a wild pitch cutting the deficit to one run.
East Carolina starter Brittany Boyd (8-6) held off the Billikens and earned a complete-game victory allowing just four hits, while fanning four.
In game two, pitching was the story again as freshman starter Brently Bridgeforth (11-12) allowed only one earned run with eight strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
Saint Louis (21-17, 9-13) scored in the top of the fourth when Kerri Higgins plated the first run of the game as she scored from third on a passed ball after a series of singles moved her over.
The Pirates (23-31, 4-19) responded in the bottom of the fourth when Krista Jessup doubled to left-center and moved to third on a Stacy Smith single. Smith proceeded to steal second base and with two runners in scoring position, senior left fielder Brandi Benedict singled to right scoring both runners.
