Lady Pirates Shut Out Old Dominion in Exhibition Play
August 20, 2003 | Soccer
GREENVILLE, N.C. ? The East Carolina women's soccer team defeated Old Dominion, 5-0, as five different Lady Pirates netted goals, in both team's first preseason game of the season on Wednesday.
The Pirates got on the scoreboard early in the first period at the 13 minute mark when junior Krystel Pabey received a pass from junior transfer Rennice Sherard. Thirty-eight seconds later, Meghan McCallion stole a pass from a Monarch defender racing down the left side of the field for the Pirates' second goal.
Freshman Kate Lowe scored the Pirates' third goal of the period in the 22nd minute on a pass from Sherard, who collected two assists on the day. Sophomore Tracy FitzGerald placed a corner kick across the goalie box where Megan Schwanke guided a touch pass to sophomore Rachelle Cabeceiras for the fourth goal.
Calpo scored the last ECU goal at the 58 minute mark on an assist from Allison Howell that went past Monarch goalkeeper Stephanie Miller's hand.
"I think overall we did well as a team," said Donnenwirth. "We capitalized on their mistakes early and it kind of took the wind out of their sails. In the second half, even though we didn't score any goals I thought we produced some good chances."
The Monarchs struggled offensively as they recorded only seven shots.
"They struggled to get chances and we have to give a lot of credit to our backs. Lauren Church made a great break away save for us, but that's what good goalkeepers do. The main thing is that we need to continually improve and get better."
ECU opens its regular season against Texas on Friday, Aug. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in Raleigh, N.C., at SAS Stadium, home of the WUSA's Carolina Courage.
