Penny Perrott Named C-USA Defensive Player of the Week
September 15, 2003 | Soccer
GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Conference USA announced today that Penny Perrott (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) has been chosen as C-USA Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.
Perrott, a senior defender for ECU, helped the Pirates (3-2-1) record their third shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory over Western Carolina Sunday. Against the Catamounts, Perrott and the Pirate backfield allowed only one shot the entire match.
For the week, she collected four shots on goal and played every minute of both matches, including the Pirates' 2-1 loss to then No. 6 Florida Gators.
A preseason All-Conference USA pick, Perrott has recorded one goal and two assists on the season while anchoring down the Pirates backfield. During the Charlotte Classic Tournament, she was named to the all-tournament team and earned MVP honors for her defensive performance, which included a Pirate shutout against in-state rival UNC Wilmington.
"Penny has been a big factor for us this year," said ECU head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "She had great games for us this week with the shutout against Western and was a major presense in the Florida game winning balls and neutralizing their offense. She is the kind of player that teams have to find away around if they want to score."
Perrott is the second Pirate to earn C-USA Player of the Week honors this year. Sophomore Meghan McCallion captured Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors for the week of Sept. 2.
The Lady Pirates open conference play this week when they host a pair of C-USA matches on Sept. 19 at 4 p.m. against USF and Southern Miss on Sept. 21 at 1 p.m.
