Lady Pirate Soccer Gets First Conference Win of the Season

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The East Carolina women's soccer team got its first conference win of the season after shutting out Southern Miss by a 4-0 count. The Pirates (4-2-2, 1-0-1), had four different scorers on the afternoon, three of which scored their first goals of the season.
Junior Krystel Pabey started the scoring action for the Pirates in the 35th minute of play when she fired a laser shot past the Golden Eagles' (5-2-1, 0-1-1) Anna Snyder. The goal came off a two-person touch pass by Meghan McCallion and Anastasia Nikas. It was Pabey's first goal of the season and her third of her career.
In the second half, ECU piled on the goals when McCallion received a pass from Rachel Hils and Penny Perrott to put the Pirates up 2-0. McCallion scored her sixth goal of the season when Perrott found her in the goal box and used a spin move to get past one defender and the goalkeeper.
The last 15 minutes of the game saw the Pirates score two more goals. The first came from sophomore Carmen Calpo in the 75th minute of play. Melissa Penney found Calpo outside the goal box for a low right-corner goal. At the 83rd-minute mark, Nikas score the final goal of the afternoon finishing with one goal and one assist on the day.
"I thought our intensity level was much better today than it was on Friday night," said head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "We came out with a different attitude and a little more urgency than normal. It took a while for us to start clicking but we were able to find the midfielders and I think that wore them down. At the end of the game, we were able to sub out a lot and got a chance to let everyone play. Overall it was a good effort from our team and I thought everyone had a good game."
The Lady Pirates will continue conference action next week as they travel to Tulane on Sept. 26, and Houston on Sept. 28, followed by an Oct.1 match at Wake Forest, before returning home Oct. 5 to face Elon.
