HOUSTON, TEXAS -- The East Carolina women's soccer team recorded its second win in Conference USA action Sunday by defeating Houston, 3-2, at John O'Quinn Field.
In a match that was thought to be low scoring, the Lady Pirates (5-3-2. 2-1-1) got the first of three goals of the day when junior Sarah Stoltz scored in the seventh minute of play.
The Cougars (2-8-1, 0-4-0) responded quickly with two goals in less than 20 minutes, to take the lead at, 2-1, from Meghan Moreo and Nikki Hawkins.
Freshman Rachel Hils collected her first collegiate goal on a pass from Anastasia Nikas to tie the match in the 44th-minute at, 2-2.
East Caroina took advantage of the wind at its back in the second period posting eight shots and netting the game-winner off a corner kick. Nikas got her second assist on the day when she placed the ball in the box and senior Penny Perrott headed a pass to Meghan McCallion for the goal.
"We started strong today and got an early goal," said ECU head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "After the goal, we seemed to let the foot off the gas pedal and let them get two quick goals on us. But we fought back and got a much needed win. We got good performances from Melissa Penny and Rachel Hils in the midfield today."
The Pirates will travel to Winston-Salem on Wednesday to take on Wake Forest for a rare mid-week game on Oct. 1, before heading home to host Elon at Bunting Field on Oct. 5.
