September 03, 2003 | Men's Track and Field
The three ECU student-athletes honored were senior Kelli Litten (Canal Fulton, Ohio), sophomore Tammie Mentzel (East Patchogue, N.Y.), and senior Kay Livick (Richmond, Va.). The trio excelled both on the track and in the classroom as all three represented ECU at the NCAA East Regional Track and Field Championships held at George Mason University, as well as establishing ECU records in their respective events.
Mentzel, an elementary education major with a 3.34 grade point average, improvd her pole vault personal-best over a foot in 2003 while breaking the school record in both the indoor (11-5.75) and outdoor (12-0) event. She posted the second-best vault mark in Conference USA.
Livick, an art major with a 3.33 GPA, finished her stellar career by leaving her name all over the ECU record book. She holds three individual school indoor records with the 1,000-meter run (2:54.28), 1,500-meter run (4:42.04), mile run (4:54.02), and as a member of the record-setting distance medley relay team (11:48.76). Outdoors, she holds the record in the 1,500 meters (4:26.99), 3,000 meters (9:47.14), and was a member of the record-setting 4x800, 4x1500, distance medley, and sprint medley relay teams.
Litten, a history major with a 3.96 GPA, also stamped her name in the record books during 2003 by setting the ECU standard in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:55.80.
