CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The East Carolina women's soccer team recorded its second consecutive shut out of the season as they defeated in-state rival UNC Wilmington, 1-0, on the first day of the Charlotte Classic, held in Charlotte, N.C.
The Pirates (2-1) and the Seahawks (1-2) played a scoreless first period with Pirate goalkeeper Lindsi Troxler recording two saves on four shots. Troxler finished the game with five saves on her way to collecting her first shut out and win as a Pirate.
"Overall I think we struggled a bit today," said ECU head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "We missed a few opportunities to get on the board early. Wilmington always seems to be a tough and physical team for us when we play. They are well coached and they bring it every time. But the bottom line is we won today and we'll have to play better on Sunday if we want to beat Delaware."
ECU got on the board in the 70th minute of the play when sophomore Stephanie Walker fired a cross pass to Meghan McCallion, who beat Seahawk keeper Rachael Wilson for the only goal of the match. The goal by McCallion was her fourth of the season and Walker collected her first assist of the season and second of her career.
The Pirates will face the Delaware Blue Hens on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 11 am in their final match of the Charlotte Classic. ECU's next home match will take place on Sept. 14 against Western Carolina at 1 pm.
