January 29, 2004 | Men's Track and Field
ECU's women will send a group of athletes to Chapel Hill, N.C., on Friday to compete in the two-day North Carolina Invitational and Multi Indoor Meet. Among the teams they will face there are North Carolina, NC State, Charlotte, Duke, VCU, UNC Wilmington, and Elon.
The Pirate men, meanwhile, have a road trip to sunny Florida planned as they will compete in the Gator Invitational on Sunday in Gainesville. A few Lady Pirates will accompany the ECU men to compete against the likes of Florida, Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Miami and South Carolina. Fellow Conference USA members Tulane and USF will also field teams in the one-day meet.
Florida and Auburn both field nationally ranked men's teams, while the Gators, Georgia, Miami, South Carolina, Florida State, and Georgia Tech are all nationally ranked on the women's side.
In the most current Conference USA individual rankings, ECU's Tammie Mentzel leads with way with the league's best pole vault mark (11-11.75) to date. Teammate Tara DeBrielle holds the third-fastest time in the 800 meters.
ECU's Domonick Richmond is currently ranked fifth in C-USA in the 400 meters, Stephen Tausend is third in the 5,000, and the Pirates' 4x400-meter relay team of Thomas Lewis, Michael Hillian, Richmond, and B.J. Henderson is also ranked third.
