McCallion and Calpo Lift Pirates Over Tulane, 2-0
October 15, 2004 | Soccer
GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Junior's Meghan McCallion and Carmen Calpo hooked up twice on both of East Carolina's goals to give the Pirates a, 2-0, win over Tulane in Conference USA action Friday afternoon at Bunting Field.
McCallion (Long Island, NY) scored the Pirates (4-8-2, 2-3-1) first goal in the 41st minute of play when Calpo served a midfield pass and McCallion broke away from a Tulane defender to place a shot far post for ECU's first goal.
In the second half, Calpo and McCallion connected on the Pirates second goal, when Calpo's shot was blocked by keeper Megan Morey. Calpo recovered her blocked shot and lightly sent a pass to McCallion, who was 12 yards out for her second goal of the day and seventh of the season.
Pirate goal keeper Lauren Church faced seven shots on the afternoon recording five saves in 90 minutes in the net. With the shutout, her fourth of the season and fifth of her career, Church moved into tie for third place on ECU's all-time list.
"This was a big win for us today," said head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "I thought our defense did a great job of stopping their attacks. They had more corner kicks than we did and that tells you that our defense was fighting hard. Meghan (McCallion) played a great game up front today and I thought Rachel Hils was a factor at the center-mid position."
With the win, ECU improves to 17-13-8 all-time in C-USA. The Pirates will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 17 when they host Southern Miss at Bunting Field with a 1 p.m. start scheduled.
