GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The East Carolina women's soccer team completed its first weekend sweep in Conference USA action Sunday by downing Southern Miss 2-1 at Bunting Field.
The Pirates (5-8-2, 3-3-1) fell behind early when Southern Miss (5-8-1, 1-7-0) forward Megan Kolts received a midfield pass from Kim Turner and drove past two Pirate defenders scoring the games first goal at the 12 minute mark with a far post shot. It was Kolts second goal of the season.
ECU wasted little time in getting on the score board in the second half. Junior Meghan McCallion took aim from seven yards out off a pass from Carmen Calpo. McCallion's shot was blocked by Southern Miss keeper Anna Snyder and Krystel Pabey find herself in the right place at the right time for the rebound to score the equalizer in the 55th minute of play.
In the 72nd minute of play, ECU's Rachel Hils scored her second goal of the season off a throw-in by Pabey, when she headed the ball over Snyder for the game-winning goal.
"I thought that we worked extremely hard today to get that win," said head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "We never stopped battling and this was the first time that came back from being a goal down all year. Krystel Pabey played a phenomenal game today with one goal and the assist on the long throw in was a big problem for them. I'm proud of the way that they came through with the win."
Church faced three shots on the afternoon recording one save in 90 minutes of play in goal for the Pirates.
With the win, ECU improves to 18-13-8 all-time in C-USA play, and will hit the road this weekend against Cincinnati (Oct. 22) and Louisville (Oct. 24). The Pirates next home match will be Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. when they face South Florida on Senior Day.
