Calpo's Overtime Goal Lifts Pirates Over Bearcats, 2-1
October 22, 2004 | Soccer
CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The East Carolina women's soccer team recorded its first road victory of the season as the Pirates defeated Conference USA rival Cincinnati 2-1 in double-overtime Friday night at Gettler Stadium. With the win, ECU extends its winning streak to three games in C-USA play, the longest since the 2002 season.
The Pirates (6-8-2, 4-3-1) fell behind early to the Bearcats (4-11-0, 1-6-0) when freshman Andrea Haney scored her second goal of the season heading in a free kick off the foot of Renee Balconi in the 14th minute. ECU goalkeeper Lauren Church got a hand on the kick, but Haney was able to knock in the deflection.
ECU tied the match at one in the second half when the Pirates captured the ball in midfield and found themselves with a three-on-two breakaway. Meghan McCallion fed a perfect pass to Sarah Stoltz, who fired a shot past a diving Sherry Slye and into the right corner at 68:31, setting the stage for ECU's overtime dramatics.
With the match tied at one, junior midfielder Carmen Calpo scored the game-winning goal, her third of the season, when she took a throw in from Krystal Pabey just inside the Bearcats box and blasted a shot over the outstretched hands of Slye and into the upper right corner of the goal.
ECU out shot Cincinnati, 12-10, in a defensive battle. Much of the action took place in the midfield as neither team made many runs. Each squad earned four corner kicks, but none came to fruition.
The Pirates will travel to Louisville on Sunday, Oct. 24 for a 1 p.m. tilt.
