Softball Splits First Two Games At Dixie Classic
February 27, 2004 | Softball
The Pirates took advantage of four UMBC errors in the fifth inning to plate five runs highlighted by a two-run single by Kate Manuse. Manuse went 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs and a trio of stolen bases. Junior pitcher Maggie Lingo tossed a complete-game five hitter and didn't allow an earned run to improve to 3-0 on the season. Lingo hasn't allowed an earned run in 21.0 innings pitched this season.
ECU managed just one run in during its second game of the day against Cornell. The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth as Manuse scored on a fielding error after leading off the inning with a single. Cornell tied the game in the bottom half of the frame and then scored the game-winning run in the bottom half of the sixth. Sophomore pitcher Brentley Bridgeforth (4-1) tossed a complete-game and struck out three in a losing effort. Senior Kristen Johnson was the only Pirate to collect multiple hits in the game with two.
Round-robin play continues Saturday with ECU playing a pair of games. Fordham will be the Pirates' first opponent of the day at 11 a.m., while Seton Hall will be its second foe of the day at 3 p.m.
