Shirley Burleson singled to lead off the top of the fifth inning for the Pirates. After a strikeout, Dany'ele Hill walked. Christine Sheridan reached on a fielder's choice as the Billikens forced Burleson at third for the second out of the inning. Kate Manuse drew a walk to load the bases. Jessup then hit a sharp grounder deep to shortstop. SLU's Ashlee Heady ranged to her right to grab the ball, but Jessup beat the throw to first to put ECU up 1-0.
The Billikens were held to just one hit by East Carolina's Keli Harrell, who had five strikeouts on the day. Ashlee Heady had the only hit for SLU, a flare out to centerfield. Billiken starter Elizabeth Nielsen surrendered just four hits but took the loss.
East Carolina moves to 42-16-1, 6-10 in C-USA. The Billikens dip to 16-35 overall, 1-15 in C-USA. The teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 12 noon.
