May 02, 2004 | Softball
The loss dropped East Carolina's overall record to 44-19-1 and 8-13 in conference play, while the Golden Eagles improved to 29-22 overall and 16-4 in the league.
After giving up one run in the initial frame, ECU plated three runs during its first at bat to take an early two-run lead, 3-1. Lacassa Hill led off with a double down the right field line and then scored the Pirates' first run on a single by Krista Jessup. A walk and a Southern Miss error put a pair of runners in scoring position for senior Lara Brickhouse, who drove in both runners with a single back up the middle.
Brickhouse picked up a pair of RBIs in the final home game of her career, while Hill, a fellow senior, collected two hits.
The score remained 3-1 until the top of the fifth when USM scored a single run. The Golden Eagles then erupted for three runs in the sixth and seventh inning to determine the final margin.
Diane Hammes, Sara Boyd, and Auriel Jenkins laced consecutive doubles to put USM ahead 4-3 with one out in the sixth. The third run of the inning then scored on a Pirate fielding error with two down.
All three of the Golden Eagles' seventh inning runs scored on home runs. Heather Bell led off the inning with her fourth homer of the season. Sara Boyd then dropped a two-run home run over the center field fence after Hammes was hit by a pitch.
Jessica Holaway (15-5) picked up her 15th win of the season, holding ECU scoreless over the final six innings and allowing just three hits. Maggie Lingo (15-5) suffered just her fifth loss of the season.
East Carolina returns to action Thursday, May 6 at Elon before concluding C-USA regular season play next weekend at Charlotte.
