
Softball Drops Two At Elon

Elon(29-20-1) started the scoring early in the first game. To lead off the game for the Phoenix, Jessica Swearengin tripled to left field. Jamie Dupont singled up the middle to score Swearengin and put Elon ahead 1-0. Borgaard and Miley each singled to load the bases before Christina Melton grounded out to third base to drive Dupont home and extend the lead to two at 2-0.
In the bottom of the second inning, Elon continued the scoring. With runners on first and third, Jenny Gustin singled down the left field line to score Paige Goss from third. Then, with the bases loaded, Miley singled up the middle to drive in Gustin and put Elon ahead 4-0.
East Carolina (44-21-1) answeredin the top of the third inning when Shirley Burleson reached base on a walk before stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch. Christine Sheridan singled to right center field to score Burleson and cut the lead to three, 4-1.
In the top of the seventh inning, with runners on second and third, Leigh Savoy doubled through the left side to drive in Andiey Acosta and cut the deficit to two at 4-2. With runners on second and third and only one out, Sheridan grounded out and Meeks retired Kate Manuse to end the game.
Meeks (12-8) notches the win for the Phoenix after throwing a complete game, giving up two runs on eight hits and fanning two batters. Brently Bridgeforth (15-9) suffers the loss for the Pirates. She pitched three innings, gave up four runs on nine hits and struck out one.
Swearengin led the offense for the Phoenix going three-for-four while Miley went two-for-three from the plate. Sheridan led the Pirates on offense, hitting two-for-four.
In the second game, Elon got on the board in the fourth inning. Gustin reached her 200th career hit when she knocked a single through the left side to start the fourth inning. With pinch runner Nicole Ellis on first base, Miley blasted her second home run of the season to put Elon ahead 2-0.
Borgaard (7-3) tallies the win for Elon after pitching seven innings, giving up no runs on no hits and striking out one. Keli Herrell (14-7) suffers the loss for East Carolina after throwing six innings, giving up two runs on six hits and retiring five batters.
Dani Concepcion went two-for-two from the plate for the Phoenix while Swearengin, Gustin, Borgaard and Miley all tallied hits also.
Elon travels to UNC Greensboro for a three-game series that begins with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 8 at 1:00 p.m. The Pirates are in action again on May 8 as they travel to Charlotte for a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m.
