August 19, 2004 | Soccer
NORFOLK, VA. -- The East Carolina women's soccer team topped former CAA foe Old Dominion 1-0 Wednesday night at the ODU Soccer Stadium, in their only exhibition game of the season.
Sophomore Tara Shaw (Malvern, Pa.) scored the lone goal of the match at the 9:45 mark on an assist by junior forward Meghan McCallion (Long Island, NY). The Pirate defense, anchored by senior Megan Schwanke (Greensboro, NC), allowed only five shots on goal for the evening.
"I am pleased with the performance the team gave," said sixth year head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "The new players did very well for us and gave us some insight to how our team will look this season. For the most part, I thought our defense was pretty good considering the low number of practices we have had."
The Pirates will open up regular season play next Friday (Aug. 27), when they travel to Charlottesville, Virginia to take on the Cavaliers at 7 p.m. inside Klockner Stadium.
